ur story starts in 1987 when Jack opened Interactivity Games and Stuff on Fort St., a staple of the block for years. He would import games from Europe and was one of the first in Canada to bring in games such as Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. Victoria has a huge gaming community which certainly owes some of its origin story to a man who took a risk, bringing in these strange new games and convincing customers who came into his store looking for Monopoly that Catan was way better!
In 2005 Bill moved to Canada from the UK and found this strange little store. He bought a couple of games there and was soon invited to their invite-only game night. For 6 years during each game night the players would pop out to a coffee shop for caffeine or over to the Strath for a take-out beer…
In 2012 Bill went to Jack and proposed something crazy, something wild, something so strange it could possibly never work — a board game cafe. Somewhere you can meet up with friends, have some great food and drink, and play board games! Jack decided to roll the 20 sided dice and Interactivity Board Game Cafe was born.
After a couple of almost and maybes, we found the perfect spot at 732 Yates St, built our own custom tables (large enough for the biggest Euro games of course), and a kitchen for Jack to experiment with tasty concoctions; you can thank him for our homemade milk shakes and cookies!
In October 2013, we finally opened our doors. Fumbling our way through the first few months we finally started to figure things out. Word spread, and shockingly one day we ran out of seats to put people in… and then again, and again! So when the space next door opened up in 2017 we decided to snap it up. The final piece of the puzzle was complete when we were finally granted a liquor permit and turned the expanded half into a 19+ section with craft beer and fun drinks in 2018. In 2023 we got our license changed to one similar to a restaurant so everyone is still welcome but you can now drink anywhere.
You can come have just a coffee or something to eat, or you can stay and play games. We charge $7 per person to play games (half price if you’re under 12), but you can stay as long as you like and play as many games as you like.
